I've Found a Pet

There are several things that you can do if you have found a lost animal. Below are some suggestions:

If the animal appears friendly and approachable, you can try to confine it in a safe area. If the animal is wearing an animal license tag or a rabies tag, you may call our shelter at (719) 473-1741 during regular business hours and we will trace the tag, giving you the pet owner's name and phone number.

In Colorado Springs, Fountain, and Monument, if the animal is not wearing tags, or if you are unable to bring the animal to the shelter, you may call Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region and we will have an officer pick up the animal.

We are unable to pick up stray cats, and also cannot pick up stray dogs outside of the city limits of Colorado Springs, Fountain, and Monument. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

While it may be tempting to keep the lost pet at your home, it is likely that the owner will be coming to the Humane Society to look for their pet. You may place a choice hold on the animal if you're interested in adopting it, but the chances of reuniting the pet with its owner are greater if you bring it to our shelter.

If you choose to care for the stray while you are looking for its owner, you should follow these steps: place ads in local papers, check with neighbors and area veterinarians, hang signs in the area, and most importantly, file a Found report at our facility at 610 Abbott Lane. For more information, please call (719) 473-1741.
