Trash Can Puppies Find New Families

8-Week Exam for PuppiesOn Tuesday May 21, 2013, Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region Animal Law Enforcement officers were called to Highland Heritage Regional Park in Highlands Ranch to investigate a report of puppies that had been dumped in a trash can. Park staff said a man brought the four puppies to their office after reportedly finding the puppies inside a trash can outside of a public restroom. Officers also discovered an additional puppy in the trash can that had unfortunately already died. Officers immediately worked to raise the puppies’ very low body temperatures, then transported them to a veterinary clinic for additional treatment. ALE officers investigated several leads, but a suspect has not been found.

The four adorable puppies have been in foster care until they were old enough and healthy enough to be adopted, but now they are settling in with their new familes. See photos from their adoption day here.

About the Puppies

HSPPR veterinarians report the puppies, Lilo (female), Bridgette (female), Brutus (male) and Gus-Gus (male), are in good health following their 8-week health check and they have already been spayed/neutered. They are a long-haired, small breed mix, possibly a Shih Tzu-Lhasa Apso mix.

Adoption Process

The public has been closely following this story of survival and HSPPR received about 60 applications from potential adopters all over the state of Colorado. Because so many people were interested in adopting these puppies and this was an unconventional case, we created a special streamlined process to find good homes for the puppies and give interested adopters equal opportunity. All valid applications were entered into a random drawing, and four lucky adopters were chosen and contacted.
