Community Cat Service
Cats roaming your neighborhood? While Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region helps find loving homes for thousands of homeless cats every year, there are some cats that prefer living in outdoor colonies in our neighborhoods. You can lend a paw by helping us keep an eye on these cats as a community cat colony manager.
HSPPR’s Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) service is sanctioned in the City of Colorado Springs, as well as the City and County of Pueblo. The goal is to humanely decrease cat overpopulation and improve their quality of life. And we couldn’t do it without our colony managers.
Colony managers serve as our on-the-ground contact, providing food and water for the cats, as well as monitoring their health and population size. In return, HSPPR provides spay/neuter services to control overpopulation, and free vaccinations against rabies and other illnesses to ensure a healthy and happy colony. Spaying/neutering may prevent cats from yowling, fighting, and spraying as well. Sterilizing colony cats and returning them to their home territory not only stops the breeding cycle, but also prevents new cats from coming into the area.
How do we know a cat is a colony cat? While under anesthesia for spay/neuter, our veterinarians ear tip colony cats for easy identification in the future. The procedure is humane and safe, and lets us know down the road we’ve already seen that cat at HSPPR.
