At Foothills Elementary School, art teacher Ellen Enger has come up with a creative way to raise money for homeless pets in the community and teach her students about responsible pet ownership at the same time. To honor February as Responsible Pet Ownership Month, Miss Ellen's kindergarten art students constructed and painted papier-mâché cat and dog piggy banks, then distributed them around the community to collect donations for HSPPR.
In addition to making the piggy banks, students have learned about philanthropy and giving back to their community, as well as the importance of responsible pet treatment and ownership.
“I have always been passionate about how art can help the community and bring people together, and this is a major pillar of my teaching philosophy,” Enger said. “The students are so excited to help the critters of the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region and cannot wait to see how much we have fundraised for them. This is an important lesson to show them how we can take a role in our communities and make changes!”
