Pets help us so much throughout our lives! They provide love, laughs, friendship, comfort, and exercise. This bond can become even more important for senior citizens, who want fun ways to stay active and a companion to cheer their days.
However, for seniors living on a fixed income, owning a pet can be a financial hardship. Thanks to the support of caring local donor, the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region can help!
We are proud to offer the Senior Citizen Pet Companionship Program, which helps seniors 60-plus years of age who do not currently have a pet.
The program provides several important resources:
- A discounted adoption fee for a shelter pet
- $400 annual subsidy for an adopted dog
- $400 annual subsidy for an adopted cat
The annual subsidy will not provide a year's worth of care and food for a dog or cat, and is intended only to assist with the owner's pet care bills. The owner will be responsible for paying any difference in costs.
The program matches pets from the shelter with seniors in need of pets. When a senior is approved to participate in this program, our staff learns about the type of dog or cat they would like, and offers matches based on our currently available shelter pets. The program does not include puppies, kittens, or variably priced animals. The adoption fee will be discounted up to 50 percent, and the program's pet care subsidy may NOT be used for the adoption fee.
The subsidy money may be used for items such as pet food or other basic supplies, annual vet care, grooming or other pet-related needs. The money is reimbursed after the pet owner has provided a receipt of the expense. PLEASE NOTE that appropriate pet care, including annual vet care, is mandatory for this program; each continuing year of funding is contingent upon the pet owner giving documentation to the Humane Society from the annual vet visit, and demonstrating appropriate ownership responsibility.
This program is limited and we are currently full. Please check back to see if space is available. Requirements for participation include the following criteria:
- Participants must be able to document a financial need and be at least 60 years of age.
- Participants may not currently own another pet.
- Participants must agree to all program guidelines and adhere to program policies.
- Participants must be able to provide any pet care in excess of the annual subsidy.
