Veterinary Services

In addition to providing state-of-the-art veterinary care for the thousands of homeless and abused animals in need here at our shelter, including emergency life-saving surgeries, spays/neuters, and dental work, Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region also offers certain services to public.

Spay/Neuter Clinic

Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region is proud to offer a donor-subsidized spay/neuter program for qualified pet owners. Through this program, we hope to help decrease pet overpopulation in our community and save more lives.

If you are interested in getting your dog spay/neutered, you must qualify for this program based on your income or participation in select government programs. Income qualification is NOT required for cats or for certain breeds of dogs, including: American Pit Bull Terriers, Bull Terriers, American Bulldogs, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, English Bulldogs and French Bulldogs.

Pre-Surgery Requirements

  • Dogs and cats at least 8 weeks of age and at least two pounds are eligible for surgery.
  • Routine vaccinations are required for animals 16 weeks and younger. We strongly recommend all animals are vaccinated two weeks prior to surgery if their vaccinations are not already current to help protect against exposure to infectious diseases. If your pet needs vaccinations, they are available through HSPPR's Surgery Center by appointment only.
  • A current rabies vaccination is required for all animals and you will be required to show proof of current rabies vaccination. If your pet is not currently vaccinated for rabies, you can add the vaccine during your surgery appointment for $10. For the safety of your pet and our community, non-vaccinated animals will not be eligible for surgery.

    Appointment Scheduling

Animals must be dropped off for surgery between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m., and picked up between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. the same day.

In 2014, following an extensive evaluation by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), the Wesley V. Metzler Surgery Center of Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region earned the esteemed AAHA accreditation. After a rigorous review of practice protocols, medical equipment, facility and client service, we were the first animal shelter in Colorado to have a surgery center with AAHA accreditation.
