Trail Tails: Summer Adventures with Your Dog

There’s nothing quite like hitting the trail on a beautiful summer day with your furry friend trotting beside you. Hiking with your pet is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, get some exercise, and strengthen your bond.

Take Bazinga, for example. When this 3-year-old Pit Bull mix first arrived at the shelter, he was shy and unsure of the world around him. He went into a foster home to help him decompress, and after a few days, his true personality started to shine. His foster parent quickly realized Bazinga had plenty of energy and a love for adventure. So they decided to take him on a hike and realized he wasn’t the same shy dog anymore. Bazinga lit up on the trail, confidently exploring new sights and smells. The experience helped build his confidence and showcased his playful spirit. Not long after, he was adopted into a new loving home where the adventures continue.

If you’re thinking about bringing your dog along on your next hike, here are some great reasons why and a few tips to keep everyone safe and happy.

Physical Benefits

  • Burn off calories for you and your pet! Hiking is a full-body workout that’s just as good for your pup as it is for you.
  • Great for high energy breeds. Dogs like Labs, Shepherds, and Terriers thrive with regular, structured exercise. Trails give them the outlet they crave.
  • Tired dogs are happy dogs. Regular hikes help reduce restlessness and destructive behaviors at home by keeping your pet mentally and physically satisfied.

Mental Benefits

  • Mental stimulation. Trails are full of new scents, sounds, and experiences, keeping your pet’s mind sharp and engaged.
  • Training opportunities. Hikes are a great time to reinforce leash skills and basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” or “leave it,” especially around distractions.
  • Bonding time. Shared adventures deepen your relationship and build trust between you and your pet.

Hiking Tips

Before you leash up and head out, here are some trail safety reminders to make the most of your outdoor experience:

  • Keep your pet on a leash. Even if your dog is well-behaved, it’s the law in many areas, including most trails in Colorado. You also help protect wildlife, other hikers, and your own pet.
  • Use a static leash. Non-retractable leashes give you better control and help keep your dog close and safe from hazards like cliffs, cacti, rattlesnakes, or other animals.
  • Bring water and a collapsible bowl.  Dogs can overheat quickly, especially in the summer. Offer water regularly during your hike.
  • Check the ground temperature.  If the pavement or rocks are too hot for your hand, they’re too hot for your dog’s paws.
  • Know the signs of heatstroke. Watch for rapid breathing, bright red gums or tongue, weakness, vomiting, or confusion. If you notice any of these, stop immediately and cool your pet down.
  • Never leave your pet unattended in a car. Even with the windows cracked, the temperature can rise to dangerous levels in minutes.
  • Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with current ID tags. Microchipping your pet is also a permanent means of identification in case you get separated from your pet.
  • Pick up after your pet. Leaving waste on trails isn’t just unsightly, it can harm local wildlife and pollute water sources.
  • Consider a pet-specific first aid kit. Include items like bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers (for tick removal), and a small towel.

Hiking is a wonderful way to explore the outdoors and share meaningful moments with your pet. Whether it’s your first hike together or your hundredth, planning ahead and being prepared will ensure the adventure is safe and enjoyable for both of you. Just like Bazinga, your dog might discover a new favorite activity, and you just might discover a new favorite trail buddy.
