Meet HSPPR’s Newest Board Member!

Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) welcomed Vickie Smith to its board of directors at this month’s meeting.

HSPPR is governed by a volunteer board of community leaders, and we are excited to announce the addition of another wonderful community member to the board, Vickie Smith!

Get to know Vickie!

Vickie is a native of Colorado Springs, raised on a ranch at what is the current site of the Colorado Springs airport.

Vickie graduated from the University of Colorado with a BA in English in 1970, a MA in education in 1976, and taught high school English at Wasson and Mitchell for 32 years.

She initially became involved with HSPPR in 1997 when she adopted two black cats, then became more active with the shelter in 2005 when she retired from teaching and worked with Dr. Wes Metzler on the construction of the current HSPPR building. Vickie has chaired six Fur Ball fundraising events, nine Pawtoberfests, and co-chaired the last two capital campaigns. She joined the Board in January 2023.

Vickie’s husband Gaylord owns and operates AA Construction Company. They have been married for more than 50 years and share their lives with their beloved cats: Diego Grey, Mick Jagger, and Jett Black – all of which are HSPPR alumni! They are both passionate about animal welfare, believe strongly in the mission of HSPPR, and have made caring for community animals a priority.

In their free time, Gay and Vickie love off-road racing, and Gay competes in the Mexican 500 and Mexican 1000 in Baja. They travel to several NASCAR races during the year and love to explore destinations in Italy and France.

Vickie is now the 15th member of the Board of Directors, click here to see the entire list.
