Adult animal is defined as any dog or cat over the age of 4 months. There may be exceptions to the number and type of animals you can legally own (such as pot belly pigs, fowl (chickens, ducks, etc.), or certain hoofed animals). These exceptions will vary by jurisdiction. Please consult your city or county code and contact your local code enforcement/zoning department for more information.

Impounded Animals

Animals impounded in El Paso County are transported and cared for at Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region's Colorado Springs campus. You can find location and contact information at the bottom of this page. Pets may be reclaimed during normal Lost & Found hours. Just follow the signs for Admissions when you arrive.

If you are reclaiming a pet, please be sure to bring:

  1. driver's license or ID with your current address (if your address is not current, you will need to bring a document with your name and current address, such as a utility or phone bill)
  2. proof of ownership, which may include veterinary records, a photograph, registration information, adoption paperwork, or other proof you are the legal owner of the animal
  3. proof of a current rabies vaccination and pet license
  4. payment via cash, Visa, or MasterCard (checks are not accepted)


Please note there may be fees associated with caring for your pet while at HSPPR. Impound fees may range from $40 - $70, depending on whether your pet has a current animal license (required by law) and the number of previous impounds. A daily boarding fee of $15 is also assessed. If your pet is not vaccinated against rabies (required by law) or licensed (required by law), additional fees may apply. You will also be responsible for any medical care incurred while your pet is impounded, including emergency veterinary treatment and medications.
